Cesium fluoride is a chemical compound that has two or more cesium atoms and one or more fluorine atoms. It is a transparent solid with low light absorption, which makes it suitable for use in the manufacture of optical components. Cesium fluoride can be used as a substitute for glass in applications such as lenses, windows, and mirrors. The thermal expansion coefficient of cesium fluoride is approximately twice that of glass, so it can be used to make high-quality optical components such as lenses. Some reactions involving cesium fluoride are exothermic, meaning they release heat. One example is the reaction between hydrogen fluoride and caesium chloride:
CeF + 2 HF → CeF + HCl
The reaction releases heat energy in the form of light emission, which can be seen by eye as a yellow glow. Another example is the reaction between caesium chloride and malonic acid:
2 CHCOH + CeCl → CeO(OH) +
