Cholesteryl chloride is a fluorescent probe that is used for the measurement of phase transition temperatures. The fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) technique uses this probe to study the folding of proteins. Cholesteryl chloride has also been used to measure the activation energies of serine proteases, which are enzymes that break down proteins. It has also been used in molecular modeling and sequencing studies, as well as in the study of lymphocytic leukemia cells and polymorphonuclear leucocytes.
The FRET technique is based on the principle that two fluorophores with close proximity will have a large energy transfer if they are in resonance with each other. One fluorophore acts as a donor and one acts as an acceptor; when they are in close proximity to each other, they can exchange energy through resonance interactions.
