The toxicity of 5-chlorothiophene-2-carboxaldehyde is due to its hydroxy group, which can form imine bonds with chloride ions. This leads to the formation of chlorinated organic compounds, some of which are carcinogenic. 5-Chlorothiophene-2-carboxaldehyde also reacts with carbon disulphide to form chlorophenols, which are hazardous air pollutants. It also acts as an antihistamine by blocking histamine receptors.
