Carbasone is a fatty acid with a hydroxyl group at the 3 position. It has been shown to be toxic and carcinogenic in animal studies. Carbasone was found to cause liver damage and kidney damage, as well as death, in mice when given at high doses. Carbasone also causes symptoms of infectious diseases such as fever, muscle pain, headache, severe sore throat, cough, and difficulty swallowing. Carbasone inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division through binding to bacterial DNA gyrase or topoisomerase IV. It has been used in tissue culture studies for the production of monoclonal antibodies against tumor cells and for various models of mammalian tissue.
