5-Chloro-2-nitrobenzaldehyde (5CNB) is a molecule that has been shown to inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. 5CNB inhibits tyrosinase by binding to the aldehyde groups and nitro groups on its surface. This binding prevents hydrogen bonds from forming with tyrosine kinase, which is a protein responsible for the activation of tyrosinase. The compound has been shown to have antihypertensive effects in rats, as well as inhibit the transformation of blood pressure into heart rate variability. 5CNB does not reach high concentrations in humans when orally ingested, but can be detected in blood samples. It is also found at low levels in human urine and faeces. The compound has been shown to bind to melanocytes in vitro and may be used as a treatment for hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma or chloasma.
