Description:2-Chloro-4-methylbenzoic acid is a divalent aromatic organic compound that is used in the production of other chemicals, such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and nitrophenols. It can be produced by reacting phosphorus pentachloride with an aryl halide in an organic solvent. The reaction is exothermic and can be carried out at temperatures ranging from -50°C to 100°C. The product is purified by fractional distillation or crystallization. This compound also reacts with copper (II) salt to form copper (II) chloride and 2-chloro-4-methylphenol, which are then reacted with phenoxy and mercapto group in the presence of ammonia to produce 2-chloro-4-(2'-mercaptopropionyl)benzoic acid.
