3-Chloro-2-fluoronitrobenzene is an inhibitor that inhibits the formation of chloramines in water. It is used as a feed additive to prevent the formation of chloramines in livestock drinking water. 3-Chloro-2-fluoronitrobenzene reacts with chloride ions to form hydrochloric acid, which then reacts with nitrite ions and acylation reaction products to form nitrates. Nitrates can be converted into nitrites by bacteria, which are used for the production of elemental chlorine. The process of generating chlorine through this reaction is known as chlorinating. 3-Chloro-2-fluoronitrobenzene has been shown to have viscosity increasing properties and isomers that are difficult to separate from each other.
