Chicoric acid is a natural compound that is extracted from chicory roots. It has been shown to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-2 receptor and PGE2, in cells. Chicoric acid also blocks the activation of toll-like receptors (TLRs) by inhibiting protein kinase C activity and decreasing the activity of protein tyrosine phosphatases. Chicoric acid binds to TLRs and prevents them from binding to their ligands, which are usually bacterial lipopolysaccharides or viral double-stranded RNA. This binding inhibits the downstream signaling pathway that leads to inflammation.
