Catechin is a natural compound that has been shown to have a number of biochemical properties including anti-inflammatory activity. It can be found in the leaves, roots, and bark of plants such as tea (Camellia sinensis) and cocoa (Theobroma cacao). Catechin has been shown to inhibit the growth of opportunistic fungal pathogens such as Candida albicans. Catechin also has significant cytotoxicity against murine hepatoma cell lines. The antiinflammatory activity of catechin may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting NF-κB signaling.
