It is a prodrug that is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes to 1-(3-carboxypropionyl)naphthoquinone (1CPRNQ). Its main mechanism of action is through binding to magnesium, which induces cell membrane permeability and results in apoptosis. 1-(3-Carboxypropionyl)naphthalene has shown an antibody response to eye disorders and cardiovascular diseases, as well as anti-angiogenic properties. It also has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells and induce leukocyte antigen expression.
