Carthamidin tetramethyl ether is an organic acid that inhibits the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It blocks the synthesis of fatty acids by inhibiting acetyl-CoA carboxylase, which is required for the biosynthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids in bacteria. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of short-chain fatty acids such as butyric acid and propionic acid. These metabolites are known to have toxic effects on neurons and may be responsible for the attenuating effect observed in long-term exposure studies in mice. Carthamidin tetramethyl ether also has anti-cancer activity due to its ability to inhibit phosphorylation of acetylcholine receptors.
