Capsanthin is a carotenoid that belongs to the group of hydrocarbons. It is a red-orange pigment with a high degree of conjugation and has been used as an analytical tool for the detection of drugs, pesticides, and other compounds. Capsanthin has been shown to have synergistic effects when combined with other carotenoids such as beta-carotene. Capsanthin has inhibitory properties on signal pathways related to apoptosis in HL-60 cells and 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. The anti-tumorigenic activity of capsanthin is due to its ability to inhibit cell proliferation by retarding the progression from G2 to M phase and inducing apoptosis.
