It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Candida parapsilosis, an opportunistic fungal pathogen, with a halide anion and a catalytic inorganic base. 4-Chloro-2-nitrobenzonitrile also inhibits the activity of butyrylcholinesterase, which is an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the brain and nervous system.
