4'-Chloroacetoacetanilide is an efficient method for the synthesis of methylene propylphosphonic acid, which is a key intermediate in the production of phosphorus pentoxide. This reaction also produces 4-chloroacetoacetamide. It is used as a starting material for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, herbicides, and dyestuffs. The use of this compound to treat tuberculosis has been studied extensively and it has shown no side effects on mammalian cells. It also has a high photostability and can be used as a colorant.
