Corynoline is a drug that blocks the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, resulting in increased levels of acetylcholine in the brain and peripheral nervous system. It has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity, but this activity is not correlated with its inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase. Corynoline also inhibits HIV infection in vitro by binding to the virus's gp120 envelope protein and preventing viral entry into target cells. The structure of corynoline has been determined using NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and chemical synthesis. This drug is synthesized from protopine, which can be obtained from various plants such as Corydalis yanhusuo or Angelica sinensis.
