Product Information
Columbamine hydrochloride is a chemical compound that inhibits the enzyme methyl transferase. The inhibition of this enzyme prevents the production of an intermediate, which is necessary in the synthesis of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme needed for normal functioning of nerve cells. This inhibition can be used to treat disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and myasthenia gravis. Columbamine hydrochloride has been shown to have strong antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus cereus. In vitro assays have shown that columbamine hydrochloride has a growth inhibitory effect on logarithmic phase cells of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Columbamine hydrochloride also exhibits antioxidant activity by preventing mitochondrial membrane potential loss in cardiac muscle cells and by inhibiting the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in liver cells.
