Calenduloside E is a lignan extracted from the Chinese herb, Calendula officinalis. It has been shown to have cardioprotective effects by restoring mitochondrial membrane potential and reducing oxidative damage in the myocardium following an ischemia-reperfusion injury. Calenduloside E also has anti-inflammatory properties, as it prevents lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response in mice. The ability of calenduloside E to prevent LPS-induced inflammation may be due to its inhibition of pro-inflammatory transcriptional factors such as NF-κB and AP-1. This compound also has antioxidant and anti-obesity effects, as it can inhibit lipid peroxidation and suppress weight gain in mice fed a high fat diet.
