Capric acid sodium salt is a fatty acid that has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. Capric acid sodium salt has been shown to inhibit the activity of toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 in vitro, which may be due to its ability to disrupt mitochondrial membrane potential and reduce the electrochemical impedance at low concentrations. It also inhibits lipid metabolism, specifically the glycolysis pathway. The optimum concentration of capric acid sodium salt is determined by monitoring the concentration-time curve using a model system. At concentrations below 0.5 mM, there is no significant effect on glucose uptake or energy metabolism; however, at higher concentrations, there is an increase in glucose uptake with a decrease in ATP levels. Capric acid sodium salt also exhibits phase transition behavior near room temperature and can exist as both liquid and solid phases.
