Caronic anhydride is a chemical compound with the formula C4H4O2. It can be synthesized by reacting hexane with l-tartaric acid in the presence of hydrogen ions and a transition metal catalyst such as nickel, platinum, or palladium. The reaction is carried out at high temperature and pressure. Alternatively, caronic anhydride can be prepared by the hydrolysis of ethyl acetoacetate in the presence of l-tartaric acid and hexane. Caronic anhydride is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform, dichloromethane, diethylether, dimethylformamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and toluene. The molecule has two hydroxyl groups that can react with amines or isobutenyl compounds to form esters or ethers respectively. Caronic anhydride also has serine protease
