3-Chloro-1,2,4-triazole is a nucleophilic compound that is used to synthesize amitrole and other heterocyclic compounds. It reacts with 4-methoxyphenylboronic acid in the presence of histidine to form an acyl chloride. 3-Chloro-1,2,4-triazole also reacts with triazole in the presence of a copper catalyst to form an alkylating agent. The nitro group can be converted into a chloro group by treatment with sodium hypochlorite. 3-Chloro-1,2,4-triazole has been shown to inhibit weed growth by inhibiting catalase and other enzymes responsible for nitrogen fixation.
