5-Chloro-2-fluoroiodobenzene is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is synthesized from 2-amino-5-chloro-benzoic acid and a halogenating agent, such as chloroacetyl chloride or thionyl chloride. 5-Chloro-2-fluoroiodobenzene has been shown to be effective against Staphylococcus aureus and other gram negative bacteria, including Enterobacter aerogenes and Escherichia coli. This drug also has antifungal properties, inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The inhibition concentration varies depending on the organism.
