2,6-Diisopropylaniline is a colorless liquid that reacts with hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen chloride and 2,6-diisopropylaniline hydrochloride. This reaction proceeds via a nucleophilic substitution mechanism with the formation of a covalent bond between the hydroxyl group of the 2,6-diisopropylaniline molecule and the chlorine atom of the hydrochloric acid. The nitrogen atoms in the 2,6-diisopropylaniline molecule coordinate to the metal ion (M) in phosphotungstic acid by forming chelate ligands. X-ray crystal structures have been determined for this compound with hydrogen bonding interactions as well as intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. 2,6-Diisopropylaniline is an antioxidant compound that has been shown to be effective against lipid peroxidation reactions. It functions by scavenging free radicals or reducing them to their corresponding
