1,1'-Dimethylferrocene is a molecule that belongs to the ferrocene family. It is a cyclopentadienyl complex with two cyclopentadienyl rings of differing sizes and can exist in two possible structural isomers. The larger ring has one methyl group attached to it, while the smaller ring has no methyl groups attached. 1,1'-Dimethylferrocene has been shown to have antibacterial activity in vitro against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. The molecule's high concentrations are due to its stability and resistance to degradation by enzymes present in the cell wall of bacteria. 1,1'-Dimethylferrocene has also been shown to be an excellent ferrocene catalyst for enzymatic assays.
