2,5-Dimethyl-3-hexyn-2,5-diol is an alkynyl group that can be found in the reaction solution. The viscosity of this substance has been shown to increase with the addition of an inorganic base. A hydroxy group and a structural analysis have also been observed. This compound is soluble in organic solvents, but insoluble in nonpolar solvents. 2,5-Dimethyl-3-hexyn-2,5-diol has a neutralizing effect on hydroxyl groups and reacts with a copper complex to form a potassium dichromate precipitate.
