Trans-1,4-Dichloro-2-butene is a chiral compound that is used in organic synthesis. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumor cells in culture. Trans-1,4-Dichloro-2-butene has been found to be toxic to cells and exhibits significant cytotoxicity against tumor cell lines. The reactions of trans-1,4-dichloro butene have been studied extensively using chemical reactions and spectroscopic techniques. This organic solution can react with hydrochloric acid to produce methyl ethyl chloride and hydrogen chloride gas. A Friedel-Crafts reaction can also occur when this compound reacts with a palladium complex. High levels of chlorine atoms are produced during these reactions and it is thought that they may be responsible for the cytotoxic effects observed in studies on trans-1,4-dichloro butene.
