2,3-Dimethoxypyridine is a chemical compound that has antiviral properties. It is used in the production of microcapsules and has been shown to inhibit the growth of various viruses, such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), in vitro. 2,3-Dimethoxypyridine inhibits the synthesis of RNA by binding to the enzyme polymerase. It also inhibits the activity of enzymes involved in DNA replication and alters cellular metabolism by inhibiting mitochondrial function. This drug has a low toxicity profile and is not mutagenic or carcinogenic. 2,3-Dimethoxypyridine is metabolized through hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase or conjugation with glucuronic acid.
