Diphosgene is an organic compound that is a colorless gas at standard temperature and pressure. It is a chlorinating agent, meaning that it can react with hydrogen to form chlorine gas. Diphosgene has been used as an alveolar type of lung irritant, which induces emphysema by reacting with the hydroxyl group on the surface of lung cells. It also causes apoptosis in liver cells through the gamma-aminobutyric acid pathway. Diphosgene's most common use is as a phosgene precursor in the production of pentobarbital sodium.
