2,2'-Dihydroxy-1,1'-dinaphthyl (DHDP) is a chiral molecule that has been used in analytical chemistry to determine the enantiomeric purity of alkanoic acid and fatty acids. The molecule exhibits intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions with the hydroxyl group on one side and the asymmetric carbon atom on the opposite side. DHDP can also form hydrogen bonds with amines and sodium salts. The x-ray crystal structures of DHDP reveal magnesium ions bound to the N atom, which stabilizes the molecule by forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds.
