Acyclic nucleoside phosphonates are a class of compounds that have been shown to inhibit the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other viruses. 1,8-Dibromooctane is a compound in this class and has been shown to enhance the transfection efficiency of DNA into mammalian cells. This molecule can also inhibit HIV from binding to the CD4 receptor by competing with it for binding sites on the surface of the cell. 1,8-Dibromooctane has a molecular weight of 242.16 g/mol and optical properties that are characteristic of an aliphatic compound. It also does not dissolve in water, but does dissolve in sodium sulfide and ethyl group.
