The chemical reactions involved in this synthesis are the Aldol cyclization and hydroxide reduction. FTIR spectroscopy has been used to study the structure of this product. Citric acid has also been found to react with dimethyl 1,3-acetonedicarboxylate, producing citric acid as a product.
