Diosgenin is a bioactive phytochemical that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, and pro-apoptotic properties. Diosgenin is obtained from the roots of the Mexican yam (Dioscorea spp.), which are rich in this compound. It has been shown to be effective against HIV infection, inhibiting viral replication in vitro and in vivo. Diosgenin also has anti-atherogenic effects through its ability to inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. Diosgenin can be extracted from the plant by hydrolysis of diosgenin esters with dilute mineral acids or alkalis. The reaction solution is then evaporated to dryness, yielding a brownish powder.
