Description

Digitoxigenin is a natural compound that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity. Digitoxigenin binds to the drug transporter protein P-gp, which is found in the small intestine and other tissues such as the brain, heart, and lungs. The disulfide bond in digitoxigenin stabilizes the protein-drug complex by preventing it from being degraded by proteases. The digitoxigenin-P-gp complex enters cells through receptor-mediated endocytosis and disrupts cellular function. This compound is toxic to human cells in culture and may be used as a chemotherapeutic agent against cancer.
