Glyoxylate is an intermediate product of the shikimate pathway. It is a substrate for the enzyme tyrosinase, which catalyzes the hydroxylation of glyoxylate to form 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). This reaction is followed by the oxidation of DOPA to form o-quinone. Glyoxylate has also been shown to have neuromuscular junctions and may be involved in inhibiting muscle contraction.
