4,5-Dimethoxy-2-nitrophenylacetonitrile is a benzene derivative that can be synthesized by condensation of salicylaldehyde with 4,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. The compound has two benzylic positions with an electron withdrawing group in the ortho and para positions. This electron withdrawing group is a nitro group and a methoxy group on the phenyl ring. The product of this reaction is 2-(4,5-dimethoxyphenyl)acetonitrile which can be cyclized to provide coumarin.
