Dimethyl 2,2'-thiodiacetate is a chemical crosslinking agent that reacts with the thiol group of proteins and peptides. It is used as a diagnostic reagent for neurodegenerative diseases. Dimethyl 2,2'-thiodiacetate binds to nitrogen atoms in the amino acid tyrosine, forming an alkylthio-tyrosine complex that inhibits the activity of the tyrosine kinase enzyme. This results in reduced synthesis of proteins containing tyrosine residues.
