1,2-Dimethylquinolinium iodide is an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds. It can be used as a fluorescent reagent and luminescent probe in elemental analysis. 1,2-Dimethylquinolinium iodide has been shown to emit light at wavelengths of 350 nm when excited by photons with energies between 250 and 500 nm. This emission is due to the presence of an imino group (C=N) in the molecule that causes the energy from the incident photon to be transferred to an electron in this group. The electron then emits a lower energy photon, which is emitted as light. 1,2-Dimethylquinolinium iodide also has a high fluorescence quantum yield, making it useful for detection purposes.
