1,3-Dichloro-5-nitrobenzene is a chemical intermediate used in the synthesis of carbamazepine. It is obtained by the desalting of 1,3-dichloro-5-nitrobenzene with water and methanol. The proton resonances are observed at 3.2 ppm and the dipole moment is 2.6 D. The chemical ionization mass spectrum shows a molecular ion peak at m/z (relative abundance) 144 and an isotopic pattern characteristic for C12H10Cl2N2O4+ (100%). The NMR spectrum shows three sets of peaks at δ 6.8, δ 7.4, and δ 8.6 that correspond to the two diastereomers of 1,3-dichloro-5-nitrobenzene:

CH3Cl+CH=CH2 + H+ → CH
