2,8-Dimethyladenosine (2,8-dMA) is an antimicrobial peptidyl that inhibits protein synthesis in eukaryotes. 2,8-DMA is a modification of the adenosine base found in RNA and DNA. This modification is induced by methyltransferase enzymes through the covalent attachment of a methyl group to the 8-position of adenosine. 2,8-DMA has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, although is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. 2,8-DMA has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in cells by attaching to the ribosome and interfering with peptide bond formation. It also inhibits the production of radical species that cause oxidative stress due to its ability to scavenge free radicals
