Datiscin is an inhibitor of the uptake and metabolism of methyl ethyl nodules that is isolated from the genus Datisca. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of actinomycetes, including Actinomyces naeslundii and Actinomyces meyeri. The dry weight of these organisms was reduced by 94% after treatment with datiscin. It has also been shown to have inhibitory effects on some strains of hepatitis B virus in vitro. Datiscin has a weakly acidic pH (6.5) and can be detected by fluorimetric techniques.
