2,4-Dinitroiodobenzene is a chemical that has been used as a fungicide and insecticide. It binds to fatty acids in the cell membrane, which inhibits ion transport across the membrane and causes cell death. 2,4-Dinitroiodobenzene has also been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme DnaK. This binding prevents the formation of ATP, which is needed for energy production in bacteria. The binding site on DnaK is in the cytosolic region of the enzyme close to the cell membrane. 2,4-Dinitroiodobenzene also inhibits recombinant proteins by forming hydrogen bonds with amino acid residues that are important for protein stability. This inhibition results from a structural change in the protein due to its interaction with 2,4-dinitroiodobenzene.
