2,3-Dimethyl-7-nitro-1H-indole is a fluorescent compound that has been shown to be an experimental fluorescent probe for the fluoride anion. It has been synthesized and characterized crystallographically. The affinity of 2,3-dimethyl-7-nitro-1H-indole for the fluoride anion is higher than that of any other neutral aromatic compounds. This compound is also selective for the fluoride anion over many other types of anions.
