Diethyl3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate is an electron donor that is used in allylation and photooxidation reactions. It is also a reusable reducing agent that can be used to prepare pyridinium salts. Diethyl3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate reacts with a variety of electrophiles, including acetonitrile and ammonium persulfate. The diethyl ester form of this compound is especially reactive with peroxide and trifluoride. Diethyl3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate has been shown to react with Ca2+ ions to produce pyridinium ions and inhibit the uptake of Ca2+ by the erythrocytes.
