7-Dimethylamino-4-methylcoumarine is a compound that has been used for the treatment of liver disease. 7-Dimethylamino-4-methylcoumarine binds to calcium and inhibits the rate of phosphatase activity and the synthesis of proteins. It also affects the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and protein. This process can be reversed by adding calcium ions to the solution. 7-Dimethylamino-4-methylcoumarine also has a reversible enzyme inhibition effect on rat liver microsomes at concentrations above 100 μmol/L. The irreversible enzyme inhibition effect is observed in mitochondrial membrane potential at concentrations above 1 mmol/L. The irreversible inhibition effect is due to hydrogen bonding with hydroxyl groups in crystalline cellulose, which leads to decreased production of ATP.
