Dichloroglyoxime is an antimicrobial agent that is structurally related to glyoxal. It has a redox potential of -0.4 V and can be used to generate hypochlorous acid in the presence of sodium carbonate. Dichloroglyoxime has been shown to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus faecalis by reacting with hydroxyl groups on the bacterial cell wall, forming trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and hydroxyl ions. The TFA reacts with amino groups on the cell wall, leading to cross-linking and inactivation of the peptidoglycan layer. Dichloroglyoxime also chlorinates proteins through reactions with nitrogen atoms and hydrochloric acid (HCl).
