1,3-Dibromonaphthalene is a brominated derivative of naphthalene. It can be synthesized by reacting methoxy with chloride in the presence of a base (e.g., sodium hydroxide) and brominating the resulting 1,2-dibromoethane with bromine. The compound has been used as an analytical standard for natural gas and has been shown to have good trackability. 1,3-Dibromonaphthalene is used in research, primarily as a precursor to other compounds that are more reactive or less toxic.
