Podophyllotoxin is a natural compound that has been shown to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by binding to DNA. Podophyllotoxin also inhibits cell proliferation in human leukemia HL-60 cells and breast cancer cells, as well as autophagy in K562 cells. Podophyllotoxin can potentiate the activity of drugs such as dimethyl fumarate and toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists, which are used for the treatment of various other cancers. Podophyllotoxin has been shown to induce mitochondrial membrane potential changes, which are associated with apoptosis induction. This drug has also been shown to be an experimental model for resistant breast cancer.
