3-Desacetylcefotaxime potassium (3DCTKP) is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of β-lactam antibiotics. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to cefotaxime, its active form. 3-Desacetylcefotaxime potassium has antagonistic effects against clostridium and can be used for the treatment of infections caused by this bacteria. 3DCTKP is used to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, and erythromycin. 3DCTKP binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
