The chemical structure of δ-3-carene is asymmetric and it can be synthesized using a variety of experimental methods. The reaction mechanism for the production of δ-3-carene is unclear but most likely involves a chemical reaction between anhydrous sodium and an organic compound such as acetone or methanol. This reaction releases water vapor from the organic compound and generates heat.
