Dibutyl ether is a volatile liquid with a boiling point of 48.5°C. It is miscible in water and has been shown to have strong steric interactions with macromolecules such as proteins, DNA, RNA and polysaccharides. Dibutyl ether also inhibits the activity of the NS3 protease, which is an enzyme that hydrolyzes viral polyprotein precursors into their individual subunits. This inhibition may be due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with the active site of the enzyme. The film-forming properties of dibutyl ether make it a potential antimicrobial agent for use in coating medical devices and surgical instruments. Dibutyl ether also has been shown to inhibit cationic polymerization reactions, which play an important role in many processes including air entrainment for paints and coatings.
