Dibenzyl dimethylammonium chloride is a hydrogen fluoride (HF) scavenger that has been shown to be effective in the removal of HF from water. Dibenzyl dimethylammonium chloride was found to have a high affinity for HF and low affinity for other cations. It can be used in liquid phase systems, such as chloroperbenzoic acid, and is also compatible with solid catalysts. This material has been shown to be effective at removing HF from water in the presence of light or thermal energy. The use of this compound as an HF scavenger can be increased by adding benzyl groups or streptococcus faecalis. Dibenzyl dimethylammonium chloride has been shown to reduce hydrochloric acid concentrations and it can also remove metal complexes such as iron, copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, and cadmium ions. This compound is activated by hydrogen bonding or metal chelating agents.
